Being Efficient

If you are anything like me, you are always looking for a faster, better, and easier way of getting things done.

I consolidate my errands so that I get them completed in the most efficient order to save time and money. I always keep a book in my car or in a bag that I have with me, so if I am waiting on someone or have to be in line for an extended period of time I will have something to do to occupy my time. One unexpected benefit that came from this, is now my daughter carries a book everywhere with her too. She loves to read!

I like taking long hot showers just as much as the next person, but sometime.............no, most of the time there just isn't enough time for that. One way I like to save time and still feel the pampering I love is to use a product that satisfies all my needs. A body wash that also can be used as shampoo and bubble bath. When was the the last time you felt like the definition listed above? We all know that moms tend to put their needs on the back burner. When this continues, we eventually boil over or worse yet, dry up completely.

It not just ok for busy moms to take time for themselves, it is a necessity. You will have more patience with your family and co-workers and you will be happier person overall.

Spring signifies new beginnings in many ways. You will see flowers starting to bloom and smell their fragrance floating in the air. Watching new born animals playing and sunning themselves on warm spring days is a precious site to see. There is something wonderful and inspiring this time of year. You can almost feel a calming peace in the air, telling you to slow down, relax and enjoy your surroundings.

I know, easier said than done......

Spring is the perfect time to treat yourself to a little indulgence. Now indulgence may mean something different to you than it does to me. I enjoy soaking in the tub with the scent of my Hawaiian Ruby Guava candle lofting in the air and the steam. The older I get, the drier my feet seem to get, especially during the winter. I want to have pretty, soft looking feet for those fun flirty summer shoes.

How do you combat the effects of winter in your life?

Winter brings on many changes. The most easily noticed are the days getting shorter while the nights are getting longer. You would not think that would or could have such a huge impact on us. But, in actuality this change along with dropping temperatures can run havoc with our bodies.

Why Leave... Vacation At Home!

With the rising gas prices and the increased cost of living... vacations may be out of the question this year!

Why leave when you can enjoy a relaxing time in your own town and backyard! Kids really don't care as much about where they spend time with you, but that they get your undivided attention.

Ask your kids... "if you were to spend time with me, what would you like to do?"
Make this a fun exploration.

Create a suggestion box that can sit on the kitchen counter for a few days. You will need:

1 Shoe Box

Wrapping Paper

Scissors

Tape

Writing Paper

Pen/Pencil

Yarn/Twine

Cut a hole in the lid of the shoe box that will allow for suggestions to be dropped in.

Wrap your box in any style of paper you might have in the home (any season of wrapping is fun). If you do not have wrapping paper on hand, take the under side of your grocers paper bags and have the kids decorate it before using it for your wrapping paper.

Take 5 sheets of paper and cute into quarter squares to be placed by the box for suggestions.

Use the end of the pen to punch a small hole into the upper corner of the box lid. Cut your yarn/twin into one 3 foot long string. Feed one end through the hole and make a large knot so that it will not slip back through. On the other end of the yarn/twin, secure your writing instrument.

Ask your kids to help create a poster board listing the ideas and pick the top three (you may start off the ideas on the poster with a few of your own at the start). You can use markers and crayons to decorate your poster board.

One Idea:
Make this week an adventure. If you have a tent, set it up in the backyard and pretend you are on a Safari. Find a tape/CD with music and animal noises that you would find on a safari and bring a portable player outside.

At night around the makeshift campfire, talk about your adventures from the days safari exploration. What animals did you see? What do you hope to see tomorrow?

If you have a small TV that can be brought into the outdoors... a safari video may be the added touch. You can go to your local library and check-out National Geographic movies, books and tapes/DVD's that will give you a realistic idea of your safari.

You can make a fire pit that does note require a flame.
Cut a square 1 1/2' X 1 1/2' out of the bottom of a 2'x2' box. Cut one side out of the box completely, leaving only three sides (this will assist in keeping your light cooler).

Purchases Red and Yellow Cellophane sheets long enough to cover your opening. Cut your sheets into 3 inch wide x 2 foot long strips.

Tape red and yellow sheets of cellophane across the opening alternating colors every 3 inches.

Place a flashlight at a safe distance under the cellophane to create the idea of a fire.

Your Car and Cleanliness

It never fails. You just cleaned the inside of your car when your children have made it messy again with their food, wrappers, and their belongings. They may have even tracked the seats with mud.

Although, you can't keep your car totally mess-free, especially when children are involved, you can reduce some of it.

Keep odd shaped plastic bags in the vehicle. This is would be used for garbage such as wrappers, chewed gum, sticky items, anything that you normally would throw in the trash can. Once the bag is full, throw it in the dumpster, or your main garbage area.
Keep an old tote or handbag, for a few "car" toys, meaning these toys are to be played with when traveling in the vehicle only. Remind your children, these toys are privileges. If it comes to the point that you have to put their toys in the bag, they may lose that privilege as a consequence.
Keep eating and drinking to a minimum in the vehicle.
If you know their shoes will track mud or dirt, place old towels ahead of time, so your children's shoes will be wiped on the towel instead of the car floor.

Places to take your children

With rising prices on gas and everything else, it may get a little expensive to take your children out to a variety of places.

Here is a list that I have come up that is free or cost very little. Feel free to add more places to your own list:

Weather permitting, take the children to the parks.
Arrange a play date with a friend or family member.
Check with museum listings to see when discounts or free days are available.
Sometimes, zoos offer free days as well.
Check with your place of worship for activities and events.

Utilize the media to find out what is going on locally or surrounding areas. Read the newspapers, watch television, or listen to the radio. Be sure to converse with people you know to find out about local activities and events.

I tackled my living room. Once again, I looked around the living room to see what needed to be done. Then I wrote a list.

I dusted the art decorations hanging on the walls. Then I straighted the furniture. I dusted the tables and the entertainment center.

Last, but not least I vacuumed the carpet. I try to vacuum a few times per week.

Spring cleaning the living room was much easier than the kitchen. It went by quicker because of less clutter.

Losing Weight

The idea of dieting scares many people for a variety of reasons, but it shouldn't if you change you way of thinking about losing weight.

Here are some ideas to help you get started:

Look it losing weight as making lifestyle choices to better your health. You choose to walk every day. You choose to eat more fruits and vegetables.
Get fit with a group of friends or family members. If that is not possible, then join a health club that meets your needs, which will then improve the chances of meeting people to help encourage you.
Journal what you eat and the calories. When you are more aware of what you are eating and drinking because you see the results in a notebook or journal, then you are more likely to better decide if you really want to eat or drink.
Hang around with positive thinking people. That DOES make a difference and will likely help you stick with your life style choices.

It is best to consult your physician when it comes to your health and weight. Also, it is best to lose weight slowly and not quickly.

Carry a Journal

Often times, when you and your child are out and about, your child says something cute, and you say to yourself, "I will remember that forever." or "I will write that down when I get home." Chances are you may forget what your child has said by the time you are home. You may soon regret forgetting what was said.

Another scenario, you may see or read something unique special, and you think to yourself, "Oh that is good. I will remember that." Once again, when you are trying to remember what that unique moment was, you may have forgotten already.

Carry a journal or notebook with a pen, small enough to put in your pocket or purse. As soon as you hear or see an observation, you can record it as soon as possible. The journal will become a recording of your experiences and adventures.

This will be a treasure to share with your children.

Use a Timer When Checking Email

Many people now use Email as a form of communication. Often, it's for personal or business. It is possible to get hundreds of Emails in your Inbox, which can be an overwhelming task and even a time waster to go through them.

Here are a few ideas to help you organize your time when checking your Email. Set a time limit and enforce it. Use a timer that will ring at the set time. This will force you to delete emails that are not worth reading or taking your time. Once you do that, then it is time to read the most urgent or with highest priority.

And if you are on groups, such as Yahoo groups, be sure to be on digest, so that it will not take much space in your Email.

Once the timer rings, stop checking your Email.

Going Cold Turkey?

Often times, we may over eat that we do begin to do it unconsciously. When we realize what we are doing, it may be hard for us to cut or reduce our eating habits to moderation portion. You may have noticed that you overeat chocolate, fried foods, or even drink too much diet soda. Once you realize that habit or habits, then now is the time do something about it. So, how should you go about improving your diet?

Some would recommend to go cold turkey. Although going cold turkey may work for some, others would say reduce bit by bit, which I also recommend. First and foremost, you should always consult your doctor to see if you need to follow a diet. They will be able to advise you best on this situation.

For example, you drink too much soda, and you would like to reduce the amount you drink. Each time you have a soda, drink one extra glass of water. So if you have two sodas during the day, be sure to drink two extra glasses of water. A few days later, try to cut your soda intake in half, and then replenish with water. Keep doing that. Eventually, you should drink more water and less soda.

The point is for you to eventually replace excessive food with water or skim milk--whatever you prefer, until you have moderate portions.

Not only will your body feel better, but also healthier!

Spring Cleaning Part Two

I tackled the kitchen last week, and I am proud to say that the kitchen is STILL organized and clutter free. How? You ask. The secret is to clean up a bit every day and not save it for later during the week. Not only is it a little cleaning, it just takes seconds--which could be done during television commercials, for example.

This is what I did. I wrote a list of what needed to be done in the kitchen, which included reorganizing cabinets, washing dishes, cleaning the floor, and getting rid of unnecessary clutter. I started from the top down, meaning the cabinets working my way down to washing dishes, cleaning out the refrigerator, and then finally cleaning the floor.

I ended up getting rid of dishes I no longer used, donating them to a thrift store. I reorganized my recipe files. I recycled cardboard boxes that was taking up space in the refrigerator.

Not only does the kitchen look better, the air is fresher.

Remember the key is to clean bit by bit everyday, not letting anything stack up for later.

Two Tips You Should Know

Tip 1:

You may know this already, but sometimes it helps to get a reminder. If you don't know this already, then you have learned something new today!

Never go to the grocery stores hungry. You will buy unplanned or unnecessary items, known as impulse buying. It is best to have eaten your meal or snack first, that way you go on a full stomach, and be less tempted to do some impulse buying.

Tip 2:

A former car salesman informed me that when you are shopping for a vehicle, do the car shopping at the end of the month.

Good Strangers, Bad Strangers

Preschool children are curious by nature. The world is a new place to them. They are excited to see and try new things. This includes talking to strangers, which can be an uncomfortable experience for parents because despite educating your preschooler, he or she may talk to strangers again.

One of the most important things to remember is that there are good strangers and bad strangers. Good strangers are what you can consider "community helpers," like police officers, firefighters, mail carriers, and even teachers. You can explain to your preschooler that those good strangers are available for help, if they ever need it. Bad strangers may be anyone you do not know or are not community helpers.

Explain to your preschooler that he or she must always ask you, dad, or caregiver if they can talk with a grownup they do not know.

Constantly remind your children about strangers to be sure it is enforced. Be creative when teaching them about stranger danger.

Spring Day!

Spring has finally arrived...at least that is what the calendar says. Many parts of the US had a long winter and are ready for winter. Sure the weather may bring a cold or snowy day, but it will not last as long as the winter days. Regardless, stay Positive. Your positiveness will be contagious!

When the weather gets warmer, enjoy it by being outside when possible. We all need it.

Teaching Your Kids To Recycle

Recycling should practically be part of your life. If it is not, then it should be. Teaching your children to recycle is important because not only will they be helping the environment, they will be helping themselves. They will learn not to waste products they are using. This will help them become more aware of their own actions.

You can almost recycle anything now days, from cans to newspapers to clothes to tires. You can even recycle workable items that you no long want or sell. Groups like Freecycle.org is a great example of this type of activity.

Recycle at home. Children mimic their parents. Be sure to recycle aluminum cans, newspapers, plastics and card boards. Encourage your children to recycle their products as appropriate. Encourage your schools to recycle and talk about recycling.

We all can make a difference. It just starts at home.

For the next four Tuesdays, I will be blogging about Spring Cleaning since Spring is around the corner. Here, I hope to give you tips and ideas to make YOUR spring cleaning easier and more efficient.

Today, I would suggest to write a list of the top three to five areas that need to be cleaned or organized. (I know there are many areas, but if you list more areas, it may become overwhelming.) Once you finish your three to five areas, then you can make another list to complete.

In your current list, prioritize what you is most important to you for cleaning, starting with 1 as the most important.

My top three are:

1. Kitchen
2. Bathroom
3. Living Room

I will then study each room and decide what I would like to improve about those areas. That should be your next step as well. I will also try to "guess-estimate" how long each room will take me. Be sure to "guess-estimate".

Start with one area of the room, and work in small chunks. Set a timer for so many minutes to work uninterrupted as long as there are no emergencies. Do not start in more than one room. That could become overwhelming. Be sure to finish one room at a time, and cross that room off once you have finished.

I will give you my thoughts on Thursday as I tackle the Kitchen.

Using Parental Controls

There will be a period when your child will begin to be exposed to certain things you may not approve of or that may have happened already. I am not talking about the world, itself. I am talking about the Internet or television.

Your child may be a preschooler who knows how to navigate on the computer which exposes him or her to programs that may or may not be appropriate. Your child may use the TV remote control which exposes him to inappropriate viewing.

Use parental controls on the computer and television. You, as a parent, decide what kinds of websites and shows to block when your child is utilizing the technologies. You will need to create a certain password that your child cannot know or guess it. Be sure to pick a password that you can easily remember, write it down, and hide it in a safe place.

If your child does see something inappropriate on television or the computer, be sure to briefly talk about what he or she saw. Explain why it is inappropriate. It is up to you to decide how detailed you should be. Take your child's age and interest into consideration.

True or False Emails?

Emails communicate messages. There are people who get hundreds of messages per day. Often times, emails are for personal or professional purposes. Jokes, notes, documents are often sent via email. However, often times there are "Urgent" or "Scenario-type" messages.

But you are not sure if these are valid or hoaxes. What shall you do? Should you believe the email? Should you question it? If so, how?

One excellent way to question an "Urgent" or "Scenario-type" message is to use Snopes.com. This is a great website to verify email claims of almost any type of situations to decide if you should believe that particular email.

It is a good idea to always verify a story that is forwarded via email, before you send off the wrong information to someone who may believe it.

Be sure to make it age appropriate, meaning don't take children where you as a parent wouldn't feel comfortable. Maybe a more appropriate opportunity is giving gifts to less fortunate children closer to their age. You decide.

Before and after the experience, be sure to discuss with your children how they felt, what they have learned, and reactions to the experience.

Gas prices are more higher than ever before. It could even get higher by summer time. With gas prices going up, some products and services may go up as well, costing you more money.

However, here are some ways you can save money:

Carpool to work and running errands. You and a friend can take turns driving to the location. Carpooling saves not only gas, but wear and tear on your vehicle. If public transportation is available, that might be another option.
Walk to short distance places. Here you will be multi-tasking because you can bond with a loved one, exercise, and complete your task.
Pay bills online. Here you will be saving on gas and stamps.
When you grocery shop, be sure to scan advertisements to find where the sales are and use coupons. Be careful, sometimes buying in bulk may or may not save money. Do your homework.
Time to work on last year's resolutions, meaning if you are a smoker, now is the time to reduce smoking or even better yet--quitting! When we work on ourselves, not only do we feel better, but we also may save money. How cool is that.
Don't eat out at restaurants as much. Cook meals together at home. Not only is it cheaper, but you will get to spend time with family.

Don't forget to talk with others on seeing how they are saving money. While you are saving money, don't forget to have fun once in a while. It is healthy!

This year Daylight Saving Time is Sunday, March 9, 2008, at 2 a.m., in the USA. Don't forget to change your clocks to one hour ahead. However, some regions do not change their times like Hawaii and Puerto Rico.

Not sure if you should move your clocks ahead or behind? Remember this saying, "Spring ahead" when you are changing your clocks in Spring. When changing clocks in the Fall, think "Fall behind."

As a rule of thumb, you should replace batteries smoke detectors and other important appliances.

It should take a few days to get adjusted to the new time. It is understandable if you feel a little bit out of routine.

Often times, you may not like it when telemarketers call your home. You may find it annoying for a variety of reasons, such as: they selling things you are not interested in or calling at odd hours. It is common to get phone calls by telemarketers on a daily basis.

Thanks to a government website, National Do Not Call Registry, you can register your phone number on a do not call list AND telemarketers must stop calling you. The National Do Not Call Registry is run by the Federal Trade Commission.

It may be up to a month before telemarketers stop or limit their calls to you. In the mean time, you can tell a telemarketer, "Take me off your list."

Write A Letter and Then Tear It Up

Women today have more responsibilities than ever before. We are expected to marry and raise a family; some women have to work outside there home as well. Many people, including your children and friends, come to you to solve or help solve their problems or fulfill requests.

The demands of modern life can take a toll on anyone--leading to stress physically or mentally.

Besides eating healthy, physically exercising, or talking with someone, there is another way you can relieve stress.

That is write a letter and then rip it up.

The purpose of the letter is to allow you to put your frustrations and stress on paper, so that you are able to "see" them in front of you. After you feel your letter is complete, rip it up. Do not allow anyone else to see your letter.

Rip it up into a lot of pieces, until you feel you have ripped it up enough. Be sure to toss it away.

Writing and throwing the letter away should help relieve some stress.

Don't be afraid to say No

Practice saying, "No." It takes time. I mean some may be able to do it right away, others--it may take time.

You will feel better and more relaxed.

Use Family Menus

Time is precious as is. You are trying to be efficient with your time, yet be there for yourself and family. Often completing family tasks are endless like washing dishes or clothes, or even grocery shopping. However, with careful planning of certain tasks, you can dedicate more time for other tasks like spending time with your family or yourself.

Although family meals are special moments that strengthen bonds, often time it can be stressful as you prepare a meal because you may not know what to cook until the last minute. Then you realize you are missing an ingredient or two.

Use a calendar to plan your family meals. This is an advantage because you can buy ingredients in advance. If this is your first time doing this, or it has never worked out for you in the past, plan only for one week at a time. When family menus become a habit, slowly increase planning to two weeks, then a week extra when you feel it is time.

Get your family involved. Ask for input or ideas on what kinds of meals to cook, or you can even designate a day for a family member to choose meals for. How you get your family involved is up to you.

Teaching Your Children

Teaching your children is usually an awesome experience that you will cherish and remember forever. However, at times, it can be frustrating or stressful, especially when you are trying to meet a school objective by a certain deadline.

I am going to offer tips on how to make it less stressful or frustrating for you.

Turn learning into a song. Often times children (and adults too) remember things when it is presented in poetry or rhythmic form. People enjoy music and often dance, clap or tap to the beat.
Make it a transitional activity. When your child is ready to move on to the next activity, have your child recite or repeat what he or she is supposed to learn. Once that is accomplished, then allow them to do the activity.
Repeat as often as necessary. Repetition is key. I know you may find it boring, but repeat, repeat, repeat throughout the day. You can choose to repeat every 15 minutes or have two hours--that is up to you.
Make an art or craft activity. If an art or craft lesson can be tied to the lesson, go for it. Just like music, people tend to remember when they are making something. Doing an art or craft, takes time.

Feel free to ask your child's teacher for help or tips as well.

Watch Television With Your Children

Once your children is watching their television shows, be sure to sit with them to discuss the episode. Allow them to ask questions about the viewed shows. Not only will this be a learning moment, this could be a bonding moment between you and your children.

It can be frustrating or time consuming to figure out credible sites and resources. And busy moms do not need to waste time in trying to figure out that.

Here are some guidelines to help you figure if the website is credible or not.

1. The organization of that source is well known. For example, the American Cancer Society or the Red Cross. Then the source is reliable.

2. An author is listed on the website. You can easily check his or her credentials. People tend to believe articles written that have the author's name listed.

3. Many news channels found on television have websites. Use what is most common in your area first. If you are interested in reading other perspectives, and you are not familiar with those media sources, always find at least three sources from the same area to compare and contrast.

Don't be afraid to come up with your own guidelines as you find out if these are credible sources.

Utilize auction and store sites such as Ebay or Etsy. Often times, bidding always you purchase an item at a cheaper rate, however it could become more expensive than its worth. Do you homework to decide what are the best deals.
Using websites to print coupons. Sites like Coupons.com or Smartsource.com allows a visitor to print coupons that can be redeemed at stores. This saves you from buying the Sunday paper that carries those coupons. Another advantage is you can pick and choose which coupons you want.
A good website to bookmark is Froogle.com because you can compare prices of products that you are searching. I am sure there is other websites that do this, but Froogle specifically comes to mind.

Teaching Your Child to Care through Toys

With toys becoming easily available for many families, it is easy for your child to get carried away by wanting every toy they see. Often times, it is also easier for children to become more demanding and spoiled. This allows children to become more materialistic, putting pressure on you.

All this may not be necessary. In many families, children now donate gently used toys to less fortunate children who are at homeless shelters, preschools, or other institutions. When children receive new toys, that is when they donate their toys. Why not have that be the same for your children?

Every time your child receives a new toy, have your child donate the same amount of toys he just received. For example, if your child received two toys, then he would donate two gently used toys. Donated toys have to be gently used. Do not allow broken or missing toys to be donated. This will not be a good lesson for children to learn.

Be sure to discuss the process of donating toys with your children, so that they may understand the process. If possible, let your children give the toys to the appropriate parties.

Your children are never too young to donate their toys. The lessons will last a life time.

Ways to Get Exercise

Life is filled with activities, tasks, projects and deadlines to the point where we have no time to exercise. However, lack of exercise is detrimintal to your mental and physical health. It is vital to exercise on a daily basis. How can I exercise when I have little time, you ask? It is possible. It may not be a full 30 minutes, but five minutes here or there is better than no minutes.

Here are some ways you can include exercise in your busy life without really making a lot of time:

When you are shopping, park a little further away from the building. Don't park in the closest parking spot.
Take the stairs instead of the esclator or elevator.
When you are cleaning your house, listen to some upbeat music. Chances are you will be dancing while cleaning.
When you spend some quality time with your children, play a sport together where both of you have to physically move.
Planning on spending time with a friend? Plan your time together by walking as you both catch up on each other's lives.

Be creative when including exercise in your daily life. Remember five minuters here and there is better than no minutes at all. Once life slows down a bit, then you can add more minutes to exercising!

Jen: I am Jen, a mother to three high school students--two boys and one girl. Many told me that once the children get older, they will not need their parents as much. I don't find that to be true. I see once they get older, they need their parents around for advice and guidance. I also help my husband run his business, and I have been taking classes at our local university after 20 years of not being in school.

Busymom: How do you take care of yourself, so that you are able to fulfill these roles?

Jen: For starters, I keep things to do, appointments, events and etc. in a day planner because that helps me manage my time. Tonya: I try to stick to a schedule, however with flexibility. I tend to work in the same room where my children are playing. I work part-time, so that I can fulfill the needs of my family. Once the children are in school, I will be working full-time. After three or fours of work, I quit and focus time on my family. Any work questions or issues wait until the next day. Erika, a mother of two boys and a girl, has her own business in graphic design, in Chicago. She works in her office a few days per week, and the rest of the time she is home when the children are home. "I purchased the business one year ago, so I am still trying to find a balance between work and home," Erika said.

Erika: I am Erika, married to my best friend of 15 years. I am a mother to two boys and one girl. I am also a business owner in graphic design.

Busymom: You have a lot to juggle. How do you do it?

Erika: Well, as I had stated before, I am trying to find a balance between work and home. However, what I find helpful is writing things in a day planner. That frees my mind more. I am also trying to delegate chores to the entire family, so they can help out more. That is currently in the negotiating stages (smiles).

Busymom: How do you take care of yourself?

Gretchen, a single mother to a seven year old girl, formed a support group for single parents in Indiana. She also works full time as an assistant store manager.

Busymom: Please introduce yourself.

Gretchen: I am Gretchen, a single mom to a beautiful seven year old girl. I work full time as an assistant store manager. I also formed a support group for single parents about a few years ago, which I am still involved today.

Busymom: You are a busy mother. Who takes care of your daughter when she comes home from school? Also, how often do you meet with your parents support group?

Gretchen: After school, my daughter goes to a babysitter for about two hours. Then I pick her up where we began our daily afternoon and evening tasks such as homework, dinner, spending some quality time together, and other tasks. The parents support group meets about twice per week.

Busymom: Since you are a single mom, how do you take care of yourself?

Gretchen: Since I work full time, I am entitled to days off during the year. However, some of my friends do offer to have my daughter come over and play with their children about once per week which I have designated as "Me Time" even if I have a million things to do. I want to be strong for my daughter. I take bubble baths. I love candle scents, not only do they smell beautiful, but they also relaxes.

Busymom: What kind of advice would you like to give to moms everywhere?

Gretchen: Don't be afraid to network and make friends because you do need support. Don't turn down offers of help--take it, so you don't get burnt out!
