I homeschool my oldest two children. The youngest two children join their older siblings when it is time for homeschooling because they love to pretend they are big and go to school. Busymom: How do you manage to have time for yourself since the children are with you everyday? Lama: We have a routine or a schedule. I write down our schedule on a big poster board for the children and myself to read and follow. I have a personal day planner where I record appointments, deadlines and reminders. The children are expected to help update the family calendar as well with their own tasks and projects. Busymom: How long do is a homeschooling day? Lama: It ranges between six to seven hours per day. I give them a lot of hands-on learning, so it goes by quickly. Often once in awhile, we will go past six to seven hours. After that, the older children will keep the younger children occupied while have about five to 10 minutes of "Me Time." Then I will supervise as I cook and complete last minute tasks. When my husband comes home, he will usually play or read a story with the children, allowing me to have one or two hours by myself. Busymom: What do you do with the one or two hours? Lama: I will read a book in my bedroom and light a candle or two, or take a nice hot bath or shower using my favorite gels and moisturizers. Busymom: What kind of advice would you like to give to other busy moms? Lama: It is hard for women to accept help from others because they may not do it the we like. That needs to change because by us doing many things, we are taking precious time from ourselves. Don't be afraid to delegate.
Tiffany along with her husband, of Nebraska, has six children--four boys and two step-daughters. "We are a blended family, meaning two different families living and making a life together." Although her husband works full-time, Tiffany works part-time at their local bookstore, leaving the youngest two with a babysitter twice per week.
Busymom: Please introduce yourself. Tiffany: I am Tiffany, a mother to four boys and two girls. Their ages range between two years of age through 12 years of age. It is an interesting household! Each child has a unique personality and are interested in different things despite being raised together. Busymom: Do people ask you questions about being a large, blended family? Tiffany: Friends and family asked us many questions, such as how we handle parenting and other familial issues. Our children are treated the same by my husband and me. We don't differ in parenting or treatment. We stand united. Busymom: Besides raising and taking care of your children, you also work part time at a bookstore. How do you manage tasks at home and taking care of yourself? Tiffany: I use a day planner to record events, appointments and projects of everyone's because I need to know what everyone needs and has to determine if I could multi-task, etc. The older children help with chores and errands, even the youngest children have to pick up their own toys. The children know that I have a right to "Me Time" which is at least five minutes to myself. During that time, I may use a moisturizer or indulge in yummy chocolate, something to spoil myself for a few minutes. Busymom: Your time allows you to feel refreshed even after a few minutes. It is also nice to have older children help you in some ways. Do you have advice you would like to give to mothers? Tiffany: If you have older children, make sure you get some "Me Time." You will feel more relaxed when you return back to your children.
Nelly, of Wisconsin, has three children, two girls and one boy. She currently works three days per week at a local bank. Busymom: Please introduce yourself. Nelly: Happily married to my husband of six years, we have two girls, ages 3 months old and 18 months old, and one boy who is five. I work part-time at a local bank. My husband works at a local factory. I am currently on maternity leave, however I will be returning back to work in the next couple of weeks. Busymom: Wow. Your hands are certainly full! Do you even find time to take care of yourself? Nelly: Certain things I have to let go for now, until my daughters become a little older. My husband works full time. My mom and sisters do come and help when they get off of work and school. My son is in kindergarten. When the girls are sleeping, I sleep too. I try to find as many short cuts to household chores and errands when possible. I still hang on to my day planner. Busymom: Yes, day planners are life savers. Many people use day planners for all their activities. So, do you have any simple ways of taking time for yourself? Nelly: I make sure I eat healthy because I nurse and have more energy that way. I play classical music in the background when I want to calm my girls down. I do use an eye pillow when I am sleeping filled with relaxing scents. Sleep is my biggest "me" time--I take it whenever I can! Busymom: What kind of advice would you like to give to mothers, especially mothers with newborns? Nelly: Take any help you can get until things become a little easier for you. Don't worry if it is not "done your way." Also, sleep when the baby is sleeping! That helps me. Since Nelly has a new addition to their family, taking time for herself does not occur very frequently. However, she does use a day planner and an eye pillow, which can be found at http://www.allizon.com/. As Nelly had stated, if people offer to help out--take it.
A mother to an only child, Jean of Iowa, works at a local community college as a technology instructor. "Many people think that because I have only one child I am not as busy as other mothers," says Jean. "When a parent becomes a parent, they are busy until their children become adults or even forever!" Busymom: Please introduce yourself. Jean: I am Jean, a mother to a lovely six year old girl. I teach part-time at my local community college, and the rest of my day I spend helping at my daughter's school as a volunteer. Busymom: How is it to raise an only child? Jean: I am able to give my child more attention and opportunities than I could have if I had more children. Although my daughter is an only child, I did put her in preschool when she was three years old because I wanted her to be used to other children her age. So I have always found social activities for her to do. Busymom: You seem active yourself. What are some things that you are involved with? Jean: Well, I am a part time college instructor teaching anywhere between two or three classes per semester, plus am on a couple committees. After I finish teaching, I head on to my daughter's school and help out in the library or classroom, wherever I am needed until school is out. I take my daughter home. We both prepare dinner for her daddy and us. That is a good experience for her. Busymom: So when do you have time for yourself? Jean (laughs): Well it depends when my husband gets home from working in his office. If he is home early, he is able to spend time or take over some of my responsibilities at home, allowing me to have some me time; otherwise, I wait till my daughter goes to bed. Busymom: How do you pamper or take care of yourself? Jean: I light candles when I am relaxed with a book or sitting in a bubble bath. When I do take a short nap, I use an eye mask or an eye pillow to put over my eyes. Not only does this relax my eyes, but it helps me sleep quicker. And of course, like many moms, I use moisturizers. Those are definitely life savers for the skin! Busymom: What advice would you like to give other moms? Jean: No matter how many children you have, parents are parents. So, it's best not to judge parents, until you have at least walked in their shoes.
A mother of three, Dana and her family moved back to Michigan this summer. Dana was six months pregnant with her third child when they were moving. "It was tough because my eldest child--a boy, is four years old, and my second child--a girl, is two," Dana explained. Busymom: Please introduce yourself. Dana: I am Dana. My family and I moved back from Ohio to Michigan, where I am originally from. I am a mother of three beautiful children, two boys and one girl. I am also a stay-at-home mom. Busymom: I am amazed that you had made the move in the summer while you were pregnant. You just had a baby this August. How did you do it? Dana (laughs): With careful planning. You plan everything that you can, yet be flexible when things don't always follow through. I know that certain things always must happen--for example paying bills on certain dates or doctor appointments. That is a must. I record those in my day planner. I also record other tasks like attending preschool or playgroups as well. Things that need my attention get recorded. Busymom: Your husband is a physician, so he is not home a lot with you to help take care of the children, therefore not leaving enough time for yourself. How do you take care of yourself? Dana: When my husband has a vacation day or a day off, he helps. In fact, he will tell me to take the day off to myself--do whatever I like. Since I can't stay in the showers or bath too long, I really don't pamper myself too much. One way I take care of myself is by lighting up a candle. I love scented candles because they are so relaxing and help calm the atmosphere. Every once in a while, I will use a spa-at-home kit. Busymom: What kind of advice would you like to give to other moms? Dana: Often times, many people go through life without reflecting or contemplating. Before they know it, they realize that time has passed them by. Learn to slow down. Enjoy the scent of a candle or pamper yourself with a spa. No matter how busy our schedules may get, we should always try to take care of ourselves. Allizon.com has many items for moms like Dana. You can find day planners and agendas, candles and spa-at-home kits at http://www.allizon.com/.
A fulltime, stay-at-home mom, Tina, of New Jersey, has her hands full with triplets--two boys and one girl. Her husband works 12 hour days, five or six days a week. That usually doesn't leave much time for Tina to pamper herself because she is constantly supervising her children. Once they're asleep, she tries to clean up the rooms, or she takes a nap herself. Busymom: Please introduce yourself. Tina: I'm Tina, a mother of triplets. My triplets are all two right now, so I am having to deal with the "Terrible Twos" as well. My husband does help when he is not working. I plan structured activities and free play for my children. Busymom: Why do you plan structured activities? Tina: I have to plan structured activities because that is one way the triplets will learn about their environment and how to deal with each other. Otherwise, you will hear constant fighting a big part of the day! Busymom: When you have a chance how do you take care of yourself? Or what kinds of products do you use to help make your life easier? Tina: When I take a shower, I will use my favorite shower gels or body wash, and then apply lotion once I get dressed. Not only do I smell great, I feel relaxed. I also use a calendar to record activities, appointments and other important items. That helps because it keeps my mind clutter-free. Busymom: What kind of advice would you like to share with other moms? Tina: It's OK to have a "lived-in" house, meaning it doesn't look like it came out of a magazine. When your children sleep or take a nap, go for it if you want or need one. Although Tina may not have much time to pamper herself, she does while she showers or bathes. Shower gels, body wash and lotions help a person, especially a mom, feel good about themselves. Tina also uses an agenda to help organize her and her family's life. Agendas, shower gels and other items can be found at http://www.allizon.com/.
Sarah, a college part-time student in Chicago, has her hands full with her two children, ages 2 and 1. Sarah puts her two children in day care because she attends college classes and her husband works. After class, Sarah picks up their children and then is kept busy with them until their bedtime. Busymom: Please introduce yourself. Sarah: I am Sarah, a college student living in Chicago. I am studying to be radiologist. I also have two children and am happily married. It can be tough taking care of two toddlers! I want to say it is even tougher than studying for classes. *laughs* Busymom: From the sounds of it, you do have a busy life. Since they are so close in age, how do your children get along? Sarah: Well my daughter, who is one, has learned to defend herself against her older brother because sometimes he likes to tease her. They usually don't play with each other because that age is more learning about themselves in their environment. Busymom: Give us a typical day of your schedule. Sarah: Ok. My husband works second shift, so he is asleep when this all happens. It begins at 7:30 a.m., when my children wake up. I wake up around 7 a.m. After I have changed their clothes and washed them up, they are eating breakfast by 8:15 a.m. By 8:45 a.m., we are out the door and drop the kids off at daycare. I am in class by 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. I then swing by daycare pick up my children and head home. They play while I prepare dinner. After some more free play with them, I give them their baths, then read them a bedtime story and then put them in bed by 7:45 p.m. I then wash dishes, straighten the living room, and pull out my books to study and get caught up on homework. I usually end up going to bed around 12 a.m. Busymom: How do you avoid being stressed out? With that type of schedule, you definitely need to take care of yourself! Sarah: My time alone is when I am driving to class or a 15 minute resting period because I do some evening chores and my school work. My husband usually gives me a day to myself on the weekend. He'll spend an entire day with them on a Saturday or Sunday while I get caught up with what I want to do. In the mean time, I definitely rely on my day planner, so I know where everyone is at and what kind of projects are due. I am also a big fan of moisturizers. Not only do they make your skin feel soft, it's relaxation! Busymom: Any advice you would like to offer to busy moms? Sarah: Try to enjoy your moments with your children when they are keeping you busy because they will grow before you know it. Also, when family offer to watch your children just because--accept it!
Faye, of Illinois, is a mother of six children and works full time. Although her husband does help with family and household tasks, Faye ends up completing or supervising most of those tasks. I am the mother of six children, ages three to 12 years, and I work in a preschool. I come home and then work to make sure family and household tasks are met. Bless my husband, he does help when he can. Busymom: You mentioned that your husband does help when he can. What about your older children? Faye: Yes, they are starting to, even the three year old. They pick up after themselves. They also receive positive reinforcements if they do above and beyond their responsibilities. Since we are a large family, we work or try to work as a team. Sometimes, we have our moments. Busymom: Since you are extremely busy, how do you take care of yourself, so that you may continue to be healthy and happy? Faye: I have learned not to be a perfectionist and that each person has their own way of completing tasks. I also record all appointments, meetings, play dates, projects in one agenda that stays with me, so that I can keep track of all activities. When the children are in bed, I give myself a bubble bath with a good book I'm reading. After that, I use lotion as a massaging technique. Sometimes, my husband will take over the bed time routine, so that I could go to bed early. Busymom: Any other advice you would like to give to busy moms? Faye: Allow others to help in their own way--even if it annoys you. Learn to let go of some tasks and delegate. Don't feel guilty in spending time for yourself. If you are not happy, then your family will not be happy. Faye is one busy mom, yet she manages to take care of herself even if only minutes of time alone. She is an avid user of agendas. At http://www.allizon.com/, Busy Mom agendas and calendars are available for the busy mom. Faye mentions that she uses lotions to relax. At allizon.com, there are a variety of lotions for purchase, such as Malie Koke'e Body Creme, Jing Jang Creme, or Aromatherapy Moisturizers.
